Takaragawa River Exploration.

I have been meaning to explore this stretch of river, that enters the Tone river just at the back of our house, for a good while. I recently met a new neighbour running a little guesthouse up the road, and her and her workaway guy fancied it, so off we went.

It starts just up a track (which used to be a drivable lane) but very quickly the road and the valley walls rise high above the river floor. Some lovely views and great stretches of river, but all seem very inaccessible.

It turns out that Simona used to come here a lot as a child (when the road was drivable), and she knew of a great swim spot - if it was still there. The rivers up here can change their character significantly after the many serious downpours they are prone to each year.

We had a way to go before the spot she remembered, but then we reached a point where the road had collapsed completely, and the route was unpassable, at least for us as we weren't geared up for a serious trek. Luckily, just before this point we had spotted a fantastic looking place so we retraced our steps about 50 yards and tried to find a way down to it.

We were successful, and this is what awaited.

The water was FREEZING!!! But once you are in it is pretty amazing. Had a couple of salmon sarnies and a boiled egg!

The place really was a treat (I have since taken some people up there and I reckon it will become a regular spot to hike to).

The camera doesn't really capture it all but a video might help:

Not sure if it will expand if you click on it, but please try!

We also found another great but smaller place on the way back.

To be honest this whole stretch of river is just packed with sexy little hidden away places to chill out! Here's a couple more.

This is another route that I recorded on my nerdy tracker thing, so here you are if you want to see precisely where we were:
